Shannon Stewart- Countertechnique
Countertechnique is an athletic, contemporary movement system that provides tools to dancers and a structure for incorporating information into action. This class is suitable for intermediate/advanced dancers with experience in modern, contemporary, jazz, and ballet.
Shannon Stewart (she/they) is a choreographer and assistant professor of contemporary dance specializing in choreography, release-based techniques, Countertechnique®, floorwork, somatic awareness, the Gyrotonic Expansion System®, and improvisation. They have taught contemporary classes in communities, festivals, and universities for over 15 years, and had their work for stage, film and galleries presented in North America and Europe. Shannon lived for seven years in New Orleans, completing her MFA in Interdisciplinary Dance Performance and teaching at Tulane as well as offering classes, workshops and intensives in the community, creating and touring work through her company screaming traps, being part of the re:FRAME collective, as well as an artist member of the Front Gallery. She is on faculty at the University of Kansas where she researches sustainable dance practices and performance entanglements with the natural world. She lives the rest of the time in Detroit, Michigan (Waawiyatanong) with her partner and dog. @thesurrealshannonstewart
