A committed teacher, dancer, and choreographer, Claire Olberding describes her relationship to dance as exploring a “presence with one’s self” and helping dancers “develop a healthy, loving relationship with themselves and with movement." Claire has deep Portland, Oregon roots, having worked with choreographers including Gregg Beilemeiere, Eowyn Emerald, Andrea Parsons and Tracey Durbin. Olberding ran the dance program at Portland, Oregon's daVinci Arts for 16 years after graduating from NYU’S Tisch School of the Arts and returning to Portland after 9/11. She is a dancer, choreographer, teacher and visual artist. This work is the product of a 6 month residency at New Expressive Works, in Portland, Oregon and began as an exploration of “dancing and aging,” Olberding is working with five dancers ranging from ages 21 to 82. Touching on the way that a work transforms as you make it, she calls it “the dance within the dance.” Playing with the way that small, daily details thread into the creative process in surprising ways, she also sees that as connected to aging and the accumulation of small moments: “That is the dance behind aging.”
